Blogote - Internet Technology blog: Why Alexa traffic curve and ranking system sucks

  • David Hobson · 1 year ago
Alexa has always sucked and even more so since they changed there ranking system. My traffic keeos going up and so does my ranking. Surely an increase in traffic should result in a lower ranking not a higher one.

@David Hobson - hehe.. True! An increase in traffic should result in a lower ranking not a higher one.. I completely agree with you :-)

    Thanks for passing by!

I talked about this Alexa rank matter with an keywords experts but they told me Alexa sometimes providing wrong information and rank based different manners and it's depends with many things.

well not only they are not reliable but i must add one more thing. If you use an advanced anti-trojan on your system (such as iolo's system mechanic) you will see there is a "trojan" called alexa on a default win xp installation (!!) that monitors your surfing.

PS: i lost you there for a few days sid!! :D

I always knew that Alexa was nothing more than junk, but I still like to see my blog's rank improving every couple of weeks :)

well lot of people are saying that alexa is too old and better not to consider it coz we have much better analytics :D

You are true to an extend, but the fact that Alexa has a different stats system, it doesnot show direct number of visits instead the reach. I'm also not a big fan of Alexa, but the fact that you got a small rise in Alexa stat indicates its true to some extend. I would like to see you ranking on that same day.

Hello; My comments about alexa actually concern my website's ranking instead of my blog; but I am also dissatisfied with my alexa ranking. In the same time that my google ranking has gone from 0 to 3 my alexa ranking has never made it above 9 million. It was around that number at my last quarterly update from them, but since has gone down stedily every week. It was down to a little over 14 million as of last week. I'm thinking well when my next real look comes around it will jump back up again. No such luck. I'm actually writing because my site now has an alexa ranking of over 20 million. I haven't noticed any drops in my traffic on my site. If anything there has been more viewers not less. And I've added a lot of new content to my site recently. I don't know if there is really one good word to describe how betrayed i feel by the alexa ranking site and more importantly the unfair level of reliability that is attributed to their ranking of a given website. So, should I add their tool bar? I don't think so not with such an unfair evaluation of my work. Good luck in getting them changed, improved, or replaced as a standard for measuring site value. Thanks, Max
